Elysabeth Kierl Appointed Executive Director of Second Century Habitat Fund

Murdo, SD – The Second Century Habitat Fund proudly announces the appointment of Elysabeth "Liz" Kierl as Executive Director, effective January 2025. With nearly two decades of experience in nonprofit and government operations, along with a strong commitment to agriculture and conservation, Liz brings a wealth of expertise to lead the organization’s mission of preserving South Dakota’s grasslands and outdoor legacy.

Since June 2022, Liz worked as the Executive Assistant to Department Secretary Kevin Robling at South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. She started to assist as Operations Director for Second Century Habitat Fund in July 2024. In her role at Second Century, she successfully oversaw operations, assisted in securing grants, and organized impactful fundraisers, including the annual pheasant hunt. Meanwhile, at Game, Fish and Parks, Liz coordinated high-profile projects, legislative task forces, and nonprofit collaborations, showcasing her dedication to conservation and community enhancement.

Growing up as a fourth-generation farmer on a small sorghum farm in South Central Nebraska, Liz developed a deep appreciation for agriculture and the land. She carries that perspective into her work today, balancing the importance of agricultural production with wildlife preservation. Reflecting on her experiences in Nebraska, where she witnessed grasslands and pastures transitioning to cropland, Liz shared, “Farmers play a critical role in feeding our communities, and I deeply respect their work as I've lived it. At the same time, it’s important that we find ways to consider wildlife as we develop conservation goals that benefit everyone. Programs such as Second Century's Working Lands Program provides an excellent way to convert less productive, marginal cropland into habitat which can also be used for cattle or hay production. Together, we can create solutions that balance agriculture and habitat preservation.”

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Liz serves as Secretary of the Murdo Development Corp, an economic development group committed to advancing local initiatives. She has been a dedicated 4-H and FFA volunteer for nearly 20 years, mentoring youth and fostering growth in agriculture and community service.

A Nebraska native, Liz relocated from Valentine, NE to Murdo, SD in 2022 with her family. She resides with her husband, Joe Kierl, a Wildlife Damage Specialist for South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and their two children: Addison, 18, a college student studying Business Management and Accounting, and Thad, 15, a high school sophomore. Her hobbies include horse riding, fishing, camping, and cheering on high school sports. Her love for the outdoors is reflected in her enthusiasm for pheasant hunting, as well as the joy she finds in spending time with her beloved dogs.

“It is truly an honor to lead the Second Century Habitat Fund as we work together to preserve South Dakota’s grasslands and wildlife habitats,” said Liz. “I am excited to collaborate with landowners and community leaders to ensure our programs support conservation and agricultural goals, protecting the outdoor traditions that make South Dakota so unique. This is more than a mission—it’s a passion, and I’m eager to make a lasting impact for generations to come.”

As Executive Director, Liz will oversee conservation efforts, community partnerships, and strategic initiatives to protect South Dakota’s pheasant habitat and sporting traditions.
