Landowner Success Story: Steve Almos

When Steve Almos and his brother faced the challenge of managing a remote, low-fertility, weed-prone section of their farm near Gary, South Dakota, they decided to try something new. In the fall of 2020, they enrolled 15.4 acres into the Second Century Habitat Fund’s program — and they couldn't be more pleased with the results.
"We are extremely pleased on how it has turned out," Steve shared. "A beautiful stand of different grasses is doing a great job of choking out all weeds — even the nasty thistle patches. There is now a healthy population of deer, pheasants, and turkeys using this land as a sanctuary from predators."
The success of Steve’s project highlights the mission of the Second Century Habitat Fund: to advocate for habitat stewardship, collaborate with community partners, and lead conservation efforts that benefit all of South Dakota. By working with landowners like Steve, the Fund is helping restore native grasslands, enhance wildlife habitat, and protect South Dakota’s proud outdoor heritage.
“This program shows that even smaller or less productive parcels of land can make a huge difference for wildlife and for the health of our ecosystems,” said Elysabeth Kierl, Executive Director of the Second Century Habitat Fund. “Stories like Steve’s are why we do what we do — helping landowners bring new life to their land while preserving South Dakota’s rich hunting and outdoor traditions.”
Steve encourages other landowners to consider the program, especially if they have odd pieces of land that aren’t working for traditional farming or ranching. “I would highly recommend this program to anyone,” he said.
The Second Century Habitat Fund continues to invite landowners to explore the possibilities of habitat restoration. By restoring and retaining grassland habitat, we secure a vibrant future for South Dakota's wildlife and the generations of hunters, farmers, and outdoor enthusiasts to come.
